Ritsurin Koen Gardens
The Ritsurin Koen in Takamatsu City, Kagawa Prefecture on Shikoku island, is a fine realization of the ideas of Japanese garden aesthetics. Ritsurin park is a stroll-type landscape garden in the traditional circular style and was once owned by a feudal lord. It is situated in an urban area of Takamatsu city and is famous throughout Japan for its beauty. The park has very varied scenery with Mt. Shiun in the background and a combination of 6 ponds and 13 artificial hills. The park is blessed with beautiful views in all four seasons; the spring cherry blossoms, the fresh green foliage in summer, the gold and red of the changing leaves in autumn, and the snowy scenery in winter.
Yashima Plateau
Yashima is a roof-shaped lava plateau which takes the form of a peninsula rising out of the Seto Inland Sea. It is well known as the site of the famous Gempei battle in 1185 (Gempei is derived from the names of the two clans involved - the Genji and the Heike). The view from the observatory at the top of the mountain is spectacular. Below you lies a wonderful panoramic view of the Seto Inland Sea area with its many beautiful islands.
Kankakei Gorge
Kankakei, a gorge in the center of Shodoshima with spectacular views, is one of Japan's special beauty spots. It is blessed with beautiful scenery during all four seasons and is particularly popular for its views of red and gold leaves in autumn. To enjoy the beautiful views to the full you can board the Rope-way which runs along the hillside to the peak.
Honjima Island
Honjima is one of the Shiwaku Islands, which lie off the coast of Marugame. Formerly it was the base camp of the "Shiwaku Pirates", who were well known for their bravery all the way from Korea to South-East Asia. On the island there are many famous places of interest, for example the Kasajima Shuraku Hamlet, where some of the original streets remain intact and have been designated as National Traditional Structures.
